COMPETITION TIME

6 12 2012

Hi dear readers,

It’s finally time for my insanely late competition. I did promise a back-to-school comp but as usual time ran away from me and I was sucked into a vortex of work in the batcave and several cakes (which I’ll share with you at some undetermined date in the future) However, I have finally uploaded and edited my pictures and it’s time to unveil some baking goodies for you to win.

I’ve been gathering up bits and pieces for several months. It isn’t worth a fortune in monetary terms but I’ve purchased everything myself and tried to pick a mix of fun and useful items. I think any baker would be happy to have really good measuring spoons and some great cutters along with some colourful sprinkles.

This is everything you can win in all its glory.

Allprizes-new

And some close ups of the goodies:
teatowels-new

Funky, baking themed teatowels.

misc-new

A cupcake notepad and some jelly cases. These are similar to cupcake/muffin wrappers but they’re stiff, almost plastic like bowls. I thought they would be great for display or holding sweets or nuts at a party.

cupcakewrappers-new

Three types of cupcake cases. I particularly like the multi-coloured ones, they’re very retro.

cupcakestand-new

A card cupcake stand. Very pink & frothy but fun for displaying party cupcakes.

equipment-new

An inverted palette knife for spreading frosting on cakes and a product I cannot live without; a great set of measuring spoons. I’ve gone through several different sets of spoons and these are definitely my favourite. They’re easily stored, a great size for fitting into awkward shaped tubs of baking powder & clearly marked.

cupcakewrappers2-new

Two packets of patterned cupcake wraps. I bought a few extra of these for myself, I’m waiting for a special occasion to try them out. They look so elegant, I can’t wait to see how they look.

cutters-new

Small leaf cutter set. One each of a square and round dual sided cutter set. These are some of my most used sets, great for cookies or fondant shapes. One side is straight edged while the other is scalloped.

sprinkles-new

And finally, a variety of sprinkles and a black edible writer. Everyone loves colourful sprinkles to brighten up a cupcake or even for topping your favourite dessert. The metallic sprinkles are harder to find here so I snapped some of these up. The pen is completely multi purpose, great for drawing detail on fondant figures and for handpainting cakes or cookies.

Okay, now that you’ve seen all the prizes on offer I guess you want to know how to get your hands on them?!

There are two ways to enter.

1) Leave a comment here telling me your favourite baking accessory and why. I love to hear what other baking fans think is the most essential item in their arsenal.

2) Tweet me your favourite baking equipment to @cakesandbakes and use the hashtag #CakesAndBakesNI Please remember if you’re a private user on twitter I won’t see your tweet, you will need to go public for it to reach me.

It’s one entry per person but if you leave a comment here AND tweet me you will be entered into the draw twice.

I’m going to jump on the crazy train and open this worldwide, if you win, as long as Royal Mail can deliver to you I will send your prizes. The competition is for everything pictured but to reduce costs I may post them in a few different packages.

Entrants will be assigned a number and entered into a random generator.

Entries must be received before midnight 30th Dec 2012. Winner will be announced in the New Year.

Please feel free to share the competition with your friends and through social media. Best of luck.

Updated to add the winner! Jagwal aka Gerard! I’ll be in touch soon to arrange delivery of your prizes. Thanks everyone for entering!

Thanks for entering :) I agree, they can look so elegant and there are so many varieties now that there’s always one to suit every occasion.

Good luck.

not sure if my previous comment attempt worked.. so..

Favorite baking accessory is my oven thermometer, as you can never trust the dial. And my SilPat. And my pizza/baking stone..

Thanks for entering :) I literally don’t know what I did before I got my oven thermometer. I don’t think I ever appreciated how ovens can be so far from the temperature stated on the dial. Now I’m using my mum’s oven and it is 20 degrees out, I’d be lost without my thermometer, or at least have a lot of burnt cakes!

Good luck.

My favourite bit of baking kit is my hand-held whisk. I do have a free-standing mixer, but some things just need your personal attention, and going completely tech-free is just too exhausting. ;)

Great competition – thank you!

Thanks for entering :) I know what you mean, it’s hard to believe people used to do everything by hand! I must admit I still make the odd batch of brownies by hand as I have to move my Kitchenaid from a different room when I need to use it so grabbing a wooden spoon and mixing bowl is much easier.

Good luck.

Hi Leah!
My most useful piece of baking equipment is my hands. Simple I know but I believe there is nothing better than the feeling of Floured hands kneading and shaping.

10 12 2012
leangel

Thanks for entering :) I guess I hadn’t thought about my hands being a baking tool but when you take it back to basics they’re the most important tool you have. I’m not a great bread maker but I know that is where using your hands is most important. If I remember correctly many recipes can be overworked by using modern technology, mixing and especially kneading my hand are what suits best.

Good luck.

My most favourite item is my cupcake tin because I used to make them without it and they came out the most weird shaped but now they are nice and round. I definitely think a good stand mixer would help though!

Loving the goodies :-)

Thanks for entering :) I used to make cupcakes in the little party cups that stood up on their own on baking trays as I could fit more in the oven at once but it was expensive and they were quite small so I finally found a cupcake tin that I liked which fit the perfect sized wrapper. It’s funny how you can become quite attached to specific tins even when you have several for each task.

Good luck.

Favourite baking equipment has to be my giant star nozzle, great frosting can cover the most grievous cake disaster ! LOL

Thanks for entering. I recently bought a larger star tip & I agree, it’s fantastic for easy cupcakes & cake covering. I especially love making buttercream roses, so pretty & easier than anyone thinks! Good Luck.

Hard to beat a good piping bag. Versatility and perfect for detailing :-)

Thanks for entering. I’m still learning when it comes to piping, I haven’t quite mastered detail work or writing. I do love the ease of disposable piping bags though! I always hated cleaning the coloured icing from my cloth bags! Good luck.

I love me some sprinkles, especially the oldskool 100s and 1000s mix (but they have to have blue in!). :)

Thanks for entering. Sprinkles are fab aren’t they?! I have quite a collection now but I make many more cakes than cupcakes so I don’t get to use them enough. I do love to add the multi coloured ones to vanilla cake batter to make funfetti. Good luck.

I would love to enter, what a great giveaway. Equipment I couldn’t be without is my electric mixer :)

Thanks for entering. I can’t imagine having to mix by hand anymore, my mixer really has been a lifesaver, especially when it comes to buttercream. Good luck.

Made for you by Lou

My favourite baking equipment is my recently bought Kitchenaid. Been wanting one for ages and hubby bought it for me for Christmas as my old mixer broke

16 12 2012
leangel

Thanks for entering. Wow, bet you’re loving the Kitchenaid! I never thought I’d have one but I was so lucky that my family grouped together and bought me one for my 30th birthday. I’ve never been so shocked in my life. I couldn’t be without it now. Good luck.

My favourite cooking accessory is very definitely my oven. I don’t know what I’d do without it. Great blog Leah.

Thanks for entering. Lol, I guess we’d all be a bit lost as bakers without our ovens ;) Good luck.

I love my palette knife the best, especially for icing. And wouldn’t be without disposable piping bags from Lakeland, they rock!

Love the blog :-)

Thanks for entering. Disposable icing bags are a lifesaver, I can’t believe I used to have one cloth bag that I had wash out every single time! Good luck.

Thanks for entering. I adore my Kitchenaid, it’s not an Artisan but its perfect for me. I can’t believe how fast it is compared to my previous mixers. I’d be lost without it. Good luck.

I have spent a long time thinking about this! My favourite thing is the non-stick liner stuff you use on baking trays and in cake tins that can be cut to size. A silent godsend!

This competition is amazing, by the way. :)

21 12 2012
leangel

Thanks for entering. That sounds great, I’ve never tried that type of liner before, I must pick some up. I also like the look of the foil lined parchment, that seems like it would be really handy too! I’m loving all the replies because so few are the same & I’m learning about items I’ve never used myself & hopefully the readers are too. Good luck.

Couldn’t live without my kitchen aid mixer! Being able to make the buttercream then leave it to mix as I get on with other things is a god send! X

Thanks for entering. I agree, I’d be lost without my Kitchenaid, she’s a total workhorse! Good luck.
